2 TROPICAL FLAMINGOS IN ONE FRAME by M. Devoe

2 HIDDEN FLOWER PAINTINGS by M. Devoe

I recently received an email from collector Jennifer Trimble who had an interesting story about how she obtained the two M. Devoe paintings shown above.

It turns out that Jennifer recently bought 15-20 framed paintings for the frames - she was not interested in what the frames contained.  When she was deconstructing two of the frames she said that something didn't feel right about them. When she finished taking them apart she could see that someone had put paintings in the frames over whatever was already in the two frames. And what was in the two frames?  The two M. Devoe flower paintings shown above.  Jennifer knew nothing about M. Devoe or their paintings until she found this blog.

As we have seen before, Devoe's paintings of flowers are not as common as their paintings of tropical birds.  Jennifer gladly offered to share photos of her two Devoe paintings and so here they are.  

We know there are more Devoe paintings out there - let's hope that someone can also uncover the story of M. Devoe  so they mystery surrounding him or her can finally be resolved.

2 FLAMINGOS FROM 1948 by M. Devoe

Here are two flamingo painting by M. Devoe. Offered by ebay Seller yardsaledale for $199.00 "Buy it Now."  Each painting is 16" x 20." What makes these unique is that the original owner taped a note to the back of one of the paintings. The note said:

"Carol Ann

We bought these pictures when we moved into this house in 1948."

All along we have been calling these Devoe paintings "mid-century" - now we have proof. Still wish we could find out a little more about M. Devoe...

2 MID-CENTURY FLAMINGOS by M. Devoe

Here are two mid-century flamingos, each in its own frame.  I have not seen these before - very nice.  They are being offered in July, 2016 on ebay by Seller littlehouseofplenty for $250.00 "Buy it Now."  Each one is 16" x 20" framed.

2 TROPICAL BIRD PAINTINGS BY M. Devoe

After running across this blog on the internet, collector Alice wanted to share her two M. Devoe paintings with us.  She said, "Here are two that my mother owned.  My parents moved from Ohio to Central Florida in the mid 1940’s and I do not know where she purchased these, however, they were  in our home.  I always loved looking at the pair…

1 FLAMINGO by M. Devoe

This is a painting of one pink flamingo by M. Devoe.  26" x 33".  Offered in June of 2016 by ebay Seller brinoz, it sold for $99.00.   

2 PINK FLAMINGOS IN THE ORIGINAL MIRRORED FRAME by M. Devoe

This is a painting of two pink flamingos.  It is unsigned, but is obviously by M. Devoe.  Offered by ebay Seller 3224yone, it is about 19" x 23".  Sold in June of 2016 for $250.00. 

3 EGRETS IN ORIGINAL FRAME PAINTED GRAY by M. Devoe

This is a painting of three egrets in the original frame by M. Devoe.  Along the way someone removed the mirror pieces from the frame and painted it gray.  The picture and frame are 34 x 28 inches.  Offered in June of 2016 by ebay seller shadesofthepast65 it sold for $49.99.  Someone got a tremendous deal!  

2 TROPICAL CRANES/EGRETS IN ORIGINAL MIRRORED FRAME by M. Devoe

This is a painting of 2 tropical cranes/egrets in the original mirrored frame by M. Devoe. Measures 30 x 24. Frame 34 1/4 × 28 1/4.  Offered in June, 2016 by ebay Seller jgmariachi for an opening bid of $199.00 or $350.00 "Buy it Now." These are very rare in the original mirrored frames - gorgeous!  

2 FLAMINGOS IN 2 FRAMES by M. Devoe

Here are two flamingos in 2 separate frames by M. Devoe.  Offered for sale in June, 2016 by ebay Seller johnchunter.  Each one is approx. 16" x 20".  Sold for $250.00 "Buy it Now. 

3 MORE TROPICAL EGRETS by M. Devoe

 

This one is being offered by ebay seller doogerbear with an opening bid of $222.00.  It measures 34" x 28".  Very similar to the Devoe painting below:

But just enough differences to be unique.  Another Devoe masterpiece.

TWO TROPICAL CRANES IN ORIGINAL MIRRORED FRAME by M. Devoe

This is a gorgeous painting of two tropical cranes (or egrets) by M. Devoe in the original mirrored frame.  It is being offered by ebay seller john316antiques with an opening bid of $375.00.  The painting measures 24" x 30"; framed it measures 28" x 34".  

It looks very similar to one of my own M. Devoe paintings:

But, as always there are minor differences between the two.

The Seller says this one is "Just stunning" and I agree.

MCM ORANGE EGRET by M. Devoe

This painting of an egret by M. Devoe is significantly different than the others - specifically the orange color Devoe used this time.  Unusual and beautiful, this one is being offered by ebay seller ant.junkie for a starting bid of $85.00.

The inside frame measurement is 14" x 18"; frame width is 1 1/2".

2 MCM EGRETS - by M. Devoe

This one is being offered as a "50s MCM Original Painting Signed," by ricot-susa for $375.00 "Buy it Now".  The painting framed is 38" x 24"; the painting alone measures 29 1/2" x 23 3/8". The painting is signed in lower right hand corner. There is a foil sticker on the outside of the glass that reads, "Watercolor by an American Artist".

Offered again in June of 2016 for $325.00 "Buy it Now."

It looks to be the same painting offered in 2013 by Rhode Island Internet Consignment and Sales but a closer examination does note a few minor differences.  

Unlike the MCM offering, the Rhode Island painting was not signed. It did not sell when it was offered.  Maybe the seller of the signed painting will have better luck.

Offered by ebay Seller blewales in January of 2016 for $300.00 “Buy it Now.”  Each painting is 16” x 20” framed.  Paintings are unsigned, but obviously by M. Devoe.  SOLD for $300.00. 

ONE PINK FLAMINGO by M. Devoe

Offered by ebay Seller kirbkaufhol_0 in January of 2016 for $95.00.  Looks like the original frame, but the mirror inlay pieces are missing.  The painting is 15 ½” x 19 ½”.  SOLD for $95.00.

Offered by ebay Seller tinkeet in January of 2016 for $350.00.   The painting itself is 14” x 18”, painting framed is 16” x 19 ½”.  SOLD for $350.00.
