A RUMMAGE STORE FIND OF 2 PAINTINGS by M. Devoe

Collector Ken Finch recently contacted me about two M. Devoe paintings he found:

I recently purchased these paintings from a local rummage store for 20 bucks thinking I was just buying some funky old prints.

While cleaning them to hang I found the signature. A quick Google search landed me on your blog.

I hope you and your followers enjoy them.

Ken graciously allowed me to feature his find in this blog.  I would say that Ken got himself a great deal.  Here they are:

Thank you, Ken for sharing your great find with us.

A FLAMINGO PAINTING by M. Devoe

Collector Kraig Carlson was kind enough to send me photos of his M. Devoe flamingo painting:

IS THIS PAINTING BY "OUR" M. DEVOE???

I recently received the following email from a reader of this blog:

Jim,
I have a beautiful large DeVoe painting (watercolor?) of a group of Asian women, some playing instruments. I would like to send you some photos of it. It has beautiful colors in it. I think the artist may be from Chicago, as this used to belong to my great aunt, who lived in Chicago for years. It was given to her sister, who my aunt thought was a friend and the daughter of the artist.

The painting is 34” x 23 1/2” on the inside of the frame. It is behind glass.  I’m told the frame is mahogany.  It is very old, as the back of the frame has really old paper covering it.

All of the M. Devoe paintings I have seen, and featured on this blog are of tropical birds (most common) or flowers.  I have never seen a M. Devoe painting of people, let alone Asian people.  Of course, I wanted to see it and this collector was kind enough to send along these photos:

As you can see, it is completely different from the content and style of the other Devoe paintings I have featured.

The collector did know something about the Devoe who painted her painting:

DeVoe had two daughters, Myrtle and Lorraine and he made each of them a painting. Lorraine never married and was an educator-school teacher, principal and edited books for the board of education in Chicago. She died at the age of 56 of lymphoma and willed this painting to my aunts sister.  Myrtles husband Rex Schultz was a boss at Crane Company in  Chicago.

This is a beautiful painting, to be sure, but I just don't think it was painted by "our" M. Devoe.  The subject and style are vastly different from the tropical birds and flowers of the other Devoe paintings featured in this blog. Finally there is the signature.  Here is the signature of "our" M. Devoe:

and here is the signature of the "Asian" Devoe:

I told the owner of the painting that I would post it on the blog and get the opinion of the other Devoe collectors out there.

The "Asian" Devoe is in a private collection and the owner would like to sell it.  If anyone is interested, email me at jwcraig11@comcast.net and I will pass your email along to the owner.

When I started this blog back in March of 2014 I wanted to try to track M. Devoe paintings for sale and sold, but also to find out who this M. Devoe was who painted these gorgeous tropical bird and flower paintings.  One of my M. Devoe paintings hangs over my fireplace.  Everyone who sees it is captivated, and the first question is always about the artist.

I have been able to feature quite a few Devoe paintings on the blog, but unfortunately I am no closer to finding out about the real M. Devoe than I was when I started.

In the meantime, enjoy the "Asian" Devoe painting, and let me know what you think of it.

2 FLOWER PAINTINGS by M. Devoe

From the collection of Cheryl Dudek

From the collection of Cheryl Dudek

Most of the M. DeVoe paintings I have featured on this blog have been of tropical birds, although we know that DeVoe also sometimes painted flowers.

Recently I was contacted by a collector who said she bought the two paintings featured above at an estate sale.  They are on the same type of silvered board that DeVoe used for the bird paintings.  So, here they are - from the collection of Cheryl Dudek.  Photos used with permission.

Interestingly these are numbered on the back - the yellow/blue one is 128 and the other one is 120.

This submission comes from a private collection.  Collector "Jan" says her Devoe is 26" x 32" framed.  Looks like the original frame without the mirrored pieces.  This one is very close to one of my own Devoe paintings:

Of course, mine had to be reframed.  Thank you, Jan for sharing your beautiful Devoe with us.

TWO FLAMINGOS IN THE ORIGINAL MIRRORED FRAME by M. Devoe

We know very few things about M. Devoe but we do know that he/she framed their work in picture frames with mirrors around the frame.  Almost all of the Devoe paintings I have seen, including the ones I own, are missing the mirrored pieces.  Often pieces of the mirrors are there, or evidence of the glue used to fasten them to the frame but never a complete mirrored frame - until now.

ebay Seller thebearman offered the painting above - an M. Devoe painting of two flamingos in the original mirror frame.  After receiving 11 bids, the painting sold for $96.00.  Somebody got a tremendous deal.  Let's take another look at the mirror part of the frame:

The item framed, is 32" x 36".  Good thing I didn't see this until the auction was over or I might have been tempted...

To the successful bidder, enjoy your beautiful M. Devoe in the original mirror frame!

THREE EGRETS by M. Devoe

This is a painting of three egrets by M. DeVoe.  Offered by ebay Seller newtexasnorton in December, 2014, it sold for $149.99.  The size framed, is 28 1/4" x 34 1/4", the painting itself is approx. 26 1/4" x 32 1/4".  Beautiful!

TWO BIRDS IN TWO FRAMES by M. Devoe

These two were offered as one lot on ebay by Seller guilford123.  Each painting is 18" x 14" and are $149.99 Buy it Now for both.  They are painted on the foil-type board that Devoe often used.  From a distance they look like they are painted on foil; up close you can see that it is a silvered-board.  They also appear to be in the original mirrored frames that Devoe used, but as usual the mirror pieces are broken or missing.

TWO EGRETS by M. Devoe

M. Devoe typically painted several different kinds of tropical birds.  The flamingos are easy to recognize, but the birds in today's selection are harder to identify. Most often they are referred to as "cranes" but this Seller calls them "egrets."

This is a painting of two egrets by M. DeVoe.  Offered by ebay Seller newtexasnorton in January, 2015.  Opening bid $199.99 Buy It Now.  The size framed, is 28 1/4" x 34 1/4", the painting itself is approx. 24 1/4" x 30 1/8".  It is not in a typical Devoe frame, so it was probably reframed at some point.
